The Real Cost Comparison
An IKEA Besta wall costs around $1,500–$2,500 in parts. Custom built-ins for the same wall run $6,000–$15,000. Three to six times the cost. That's the honest math, and we say it up front.
So why do we still recommend custom for most clients? Because the price tag is the only place IKEA wins.
1. Fit
Homes in Peabody, MA & North Shore are old. Walls are rarely square. Ceilings vary. IKEA cabinets come in fixed widths and heights. You end up with awkward filler strips, gaps at the ceiling, and a piece of furniture that looks like it was put in the room — because it was. Custom built-ins are scribed to your walls, ceiling-to-floor, wall-to-wall. They look like part of the house because they are.
2. Material Quality
IKEA cabinets are particleboard with melamine veneer. They hold up okay if you never move them and never overload them. Custom cabinets use plywood boxes, solid wood face frames and doors, and dovetailed drawer construction. The difference shows up in year five — and is dramatic by year ten.
"Built-ins are the one part of a renovation where the cheap option starts looking cheap the day after it's installed. The premium option starts paying you back the same day."
Julio Wolf, Wolf Carpenters
3. Storage That Actually Fits Your Stuff
Custom means custom. Want a shelf sized for vinyl records? Done. Pull-out for the printer? Done. Hidden compartment for the router and modem with ventilation cutouts? Done. With IKEA, you adapt your stuff to the cabinet. With custom, the cabinet adapts to your stuff.
4. Real Carpentry Details
Crown molding that matches your existing trim. Toe kicks that align with your baseboards. Door styles that echo your interior doors. Hardware locations that work for the people in the house. These details are what make custom built-ins look like they've always been there.
5. Resale Value
Real estate agents we work with across the North Shore consistently point to built-ins as a major selling feature. They photograph beautifully. They convey craftsmanship. They tell buyers the home was loved and maintained. We've seen homes in Salem and Marblehead sell over asking specifically because of a custom built-in dining room or library wall.
When IKEA Actually Makes Sense
To be fair: rentals, college dorms, garages, basements that may flood, or rooms you plan to redo within 5 years are all fine candidates for IKEA. We're not snobs. We're just honest about where each product earns its keep.
