Step 1: Empty & Cover Everything

Move furniture to the center of the room and cover it with plastic. Drop cloths go on the floor (cloth, not plastic — plastic gets slippery and traps wet paint). Outlet covers, switch plates, and light fixtures all come off. Spending 30 minutes here saves 3 hours of cleanup.

Step 2: Wash the Walls

Dirt, grease, and dust prevent paint from bonding. We wipe walls with a TSP substitute (trisodium phosphate alternative) and let them fully dry. Kitchens especially — grease invisible to the eye will absolutely cause paint failure.

Step 3: Patch & Repair

Every nail hole, screw hole, drywall crack, or settled corner gets filled and sanded smooth. We use lightweight spackle for small holes, joint compound for larger repairs, and mesh tape for cracks that have actively moved. Light flat against the wall reveals every imperfection — fix them now.

"The difference between an okay paint job and a great one is how much time you spent before opening the can. Always."

Step 4: Sand, Then Sand Again

After patching, sand the patches smooth with 220-grit. Then lightly sand the entire wall to give it a uniform texture and roughed-up surface for paint to grip. Vacuum the dust, then wipe with a damp microfiber.

Step 5: Tape Carefully (or Don't)

If you tape, use quality painter's tape (FrogTape or 3M Blue, not generic). Press the edges down firmly with a putty knife. Better still: skilled cutters can free-hand cleaner lines than tape ever produces. Wolf Carpenters painters cut in by hand. If your painter relies entirely on tape, ask why.

Step 6: Prime — Don't Skip This

Bare drywall, stained patches, dark colors going to light, or walls with old oil-based paint all need primer. A good primer locks down the surface, blocks stains, and ensures even color absorption. Skipping primer is the single most common cause of patchy, mottled finishes.

Now You're Ready to Paint

Cut in the edges first with a quality brush, then roll the field in W or M patterns and back-roll for an even texture. Two coats minimum on color changes. Allow proper dry time between coats — most premium latex paints need 4 hours, not 1.
